World Cup Fever: Spreading Faster Than the Dengue

June 09, 2006 | Comments (11) | by T.R.

With the sorry state of the Cubs season (seriously, Tony Womack contributed our only run last night; we're desperate), some of us may think about turning our attention to another sport for a few weeks. No, no, not the NBA. Nobody cares about the NBA. We're speaking of the World Cup, the biggest sporting event in the world (with the exception of the USA). While we at the Saloon don't seriously pay any attention to soccer, or football if you will, the World Cup provides one of the few opportunities to legitimately stock the fridge with Beck's, break out the good scotch, and hurl racial slurs at our neighbors. Some of us even use this time to dust off the crossbow in the garage. If things go well, and I'm drunk enough, I'll post frequent World Cup updates here at the Saloon. If you would rather not read about soccer or the Cubs, feel free to pull up cnn.com and stare at al-Zarqawi's head for the next three days. By some odd chance, if the Cubs manage to win a game, or score a couple runs, we'll be sure to cover that. But in the meantime, you can relax, throw down a Guinness, and pray for an Iran vs. Ghana match.

Heineken and Netherlands soccer - catch the fever!

Quick update from Deutschland:
17 mins: GOAL Germany 2-1 Costa Rica
The goals do keep coming. Bastian Schweinsteiger bursts on to Bernd Schneider's pull back from the byline and his shot-cum-pass across goal is stabbed home by the unmarked Miroslav Klose.

If you can make sense of that sentence, you are a better man than I.

Hopefully, our 7 established readers enjoy soccer. Then again, anything is more enjoyable than Glendon Rusch getting hammered and Roberto Novoa crushing any small hopes for a comeback.

Roberto Novoa, Neifi Perez...these guys are not legitimate MLB players. They'd be lucky to find a roster spot on the Royals, yet somehow figure prominently into the Cubs gameplan.

Well, the Cubs are just barely a step above the Royals. In fact, when it's all said and done, they could be worse. There was hope a week ago. Hope is deflating fast. I'm tired of this shitty play. It's unbearable. The thing is, the team isn't really that bad, everyone is just underachieving right now. Cedeno is a bright spot. Even, God help me, Jacques Jones. Too many goddamn "what if's" with this team though. Tired of the excuses, tired of the poor play. Go out there and do your fucking job. Ugh, this is distracting me from the item at hand, Costa Rica vs. West Germany. With the score at 2-1, advantage Deutschland, here's commentary on the lates play, courtesy the BBC:

51 mins: Germany work a short corner but Lukas Podolski is unable to get a telling touch with his head on a dinked cross from Torsten Frings.

West Germany is now up on Costa Rica 3-1. Apparently the Central Americans have a poor defense. Or as they would say in Britain "defence", with the stress on the second syllable. I've got nothin'.

West Germany?

T.R. @ 12:58 PM, June 09, 2006

Yes, West Germany. I remain skeptical as to if that wall truly came down. Have you ever held a piece of the wall? Have you visited the site of the wall? I didn't think so. Carry on.

Governor X @ 1:06 PM, June 09, 2006

actually, my aunt bought me a piece of the wall

and Hasselhoff sang when it came down, what more proof do you need?

Jake the Terrible Cubs Fan @ 1:07 PM, June 09, 2006

Maybe you should defer to Chi-Town Girl on the West Germany argument since she's been there.

T.R. @ 1:10 PM, June 09, 2006

You're all misguided fools. They never tore down the wall. It was all filmed in a movie studio, just like our beloved "moon landing". Wake up and smell the roses.
